Most of our roses were introduced befor the civil war and have flexible stems that are easilly pegged. We start out pegging them when they are transplanted into a 15 gallon size. The flexible stems are down and attached to the side of the pot. By July they will respond by sending up lots of verticle growth from the pegged branches and I will prune off just beyond the rim and use those prunings as cuttings. In your garden the same dennse branching can be had by pounding stakes in the ground and tieing the stems to the stakes or using stones to weight down the branches.
